Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain flour (sifted)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • ½ cup (or more) buttermilk

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°.

In a mixing bowl sift flour, baking powder, and salt.  Add shortening to the flour mixture, and “cut” into pea-sized balls, using knife or fork. Add buttermilk, and work dough into a ball.  Use more buttermilk if needed to make dough slightly “sticky.”

Flour a cutting board, and roll out dough, kneading a few times to get dough “floured.” Roll dough out to about 1-inch thickness, and cut out biscuits.  Place on baking sheet, and bake for 35 minutes. Brush tops with melted butter if desired.
