Remembering Bill Huffman Jake Sammons March 27, 2026 Leading producer and arranger Steve Mauldin shares these thoughts about one of the early giants of the Gospel music recording industry … William “Bill” Huffman (June 22, 1936—March 25, 2026) was a talented musician who greatly influenced Gospel music. Bill was a businessman who, with his two brothers, turned their recording hobby into a thriving business. Bill was a co-founder of Mark Five Recording Studios in Greenville, South Carolina. Many of the top artists of the day recorded with Bill in the studio, including The Hopper Brothers & Connie, The Trav’lers, Gov. Jimmie Davis and The Inspirations. Additionally, Bill groomed many upcoming musicians who later moved on to other Nashville studios. Working closely with Lari Goss, Nick Bruno, Otis Forrest, Russell Mauldin, and myself, Bill’s mentorship left a lasting impression on everyone who passed through his tutelage. Recently, a studio musician tried to compliment Bill for his generosity of time and opportunity. Bill had given the young musician the studio keys, allowing him to record personal song demos free of charge. Bill reflected the compliment saying, “Hey, I was just a selfish businessman. I did that for my own benefit. I knew you were spending your own time getting better at what you were doing and it was going to benefit my business.” No one who knew Bill Huffman would ever accept that anything he did was for selfish motives. He was a good man, a Christian in all respects, a loving husband and father, and a very good business man to work for and with. His influence will be felt for continued generations.
